Overview

The Supported Employment Essentials Training has been developed in partnership with the Canadian Association for Supported Employment and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Supported Employment Specialists play a key role in facilitating the full community and workplace inclusion, both socially and economically, of diverse individuals with complex employment considerations. Supported Employment Specialists work in partnership with job seekers and employers to provide individualized supports that value the choice and control of individuals while meeting the real employment needs of employers.

Grounded in established best practices, this foundational course will refine students’ understanding of supported employment to benefit both work-seeking individuals and employers or contractors.

This course allows those new to the field of supported employment, as well as seasoned practitioners, to build upon their skills and confidence in this field. Each of the eight modules is rooted in best practice, and features live webinars, advanced reading, case studies, open discussion forums, and concrete learning activities. It engages students to develop their critical thinking and action planning abilities.

Upon successful completion, students are provided with a completion certificate. More importantly, they leave the course with an enhanced understanding of supported employment and best practice techniques.

Course Delivery

This 8-week, online course will be conducted using the Life Strategies’ e-learning course management system (LearnOnline in Moodle). Registered students will receive log-in instructions by email prior to the course start date. The course design relies on asynchronous discussion forums (participants post when it’s convenient for them).
Each week, a live webinar will present additional relevant topical content.

Online learning offers amazing opportunities for shared learning. Many experts in the field believe that the best learning online occurs in the discussion forums and that the posted course content may take on secondary importance. Although this course will provide comprehensive content, your active participation in the discussions will enrich your learning significantly.

If you have a disability that needs accommodation for this course, please let us know. We will work with you to meet your needs before and during your participation in the course.

Unfortunately, at this time the Supported Employment Essentials course is only available in English. We are working to make the training available in French as soon as possible.

To ensure your best learning experience and to facilitate networking with other students from across the country, class size is kept small.
